'To see what would happen' is generally a good reason for a Spark to do anything. Hell, it's this reason that Bella gets along with the Barrayaran Government.

Where this is happening is an open space of Nexus in the very vague vicinity of the Sanctuary. Bella is humming cheerfully as she works on the underside of an engine, as it hangs on some sort of complicated wheel-and-pulley rack she's constructed for just such a purpose.

It's not the more famous sort of humming, but it's a tuneless sort she's making up as she goes, occasionally tapping the engine to the beat of this song with a tool while she thinks.

To anyone who recognizes such, the engine is from a DeLorean, and Bella is going about taking it apart bit by bit to see how it works.

Manufactured trash or not, it's safe to say that this machine's got a few good ideas for her to adapt into her own constructions. Mainly how to reduce the size of her own massive engines into smaller mechanical wonders.

"Ding, hand me the Heterodyne Wrench." Ding makes a cheerful little noise and passes Bella a tool.

A pause. She slides out from under the engine. "We've been over this. This is a hinge clacker. That is the Heterodyne wrench." She points to it, and picks it up herself with a quiet sigh, and slides back under the engine to disassemble another section of it.

((Open post! Anyone can meet her, and individual threads are treated as separate events so we have no clashes between folks, two people can meet her at the same time, and not meet each other through virtue of Weird Nexus Time!))

Cordelia needed some time alone. And so she'd found as out of the way a place she could think of without going somewhere dangerous.

And what on earth was going on over there. She watches for a moment, then finally asks. "I hope you don't mind my asking, but what's the compression ratio on that thing?"

Date: 2008-11-06 08:10 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
Bella was a bit engrossed in what she was doing when Cordelia arrived. She made a bit of a surprised noise as she nearly hits her head on the engine above her when Ding makes a surprised sound at her arrival. "Gah."

"I am still in the process of attempting to figure that out--it's not from my home world." She slides out from underneath the Engine with a bit of a groan. She's wearing Victorianesque coveralls, covered in machine oil (..among other things), a bit of dirt, and so forth. "Ah, Hallo."

Date: 2008-11-06 08:18 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
"Hi! Sorry if I startled you. She smiles at Bella, then looks at Ding. "Oh, my, he's an amazing little piece of work."

Date: 2008-11-06 08:26 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
Ding makes a cheery little clicking sound and waves at Cordelia.

"Hallo, you're someone I've never met." She observes aloud, cleaning her hands off, left, then right. "And thanks, I still wish I could figure out how I made his mechanical brain work, but I'm a bit afraid to get that in depth of taking him apart."

"Annabella Fennix." She offers her left hand, more out of habit than anything else.

Date: 2008-11-06 08:34 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
Cordelia shakes, pleasantly. The left thing isn't a problem; she's flexible.
"Cordelia Nais--um, Lady Vorkosigan." Really, she's out of it today. "Nice to meet you! This place sure is interesting in terms of the confluence of different societies and technologies. Must be a lot of fun for mechanical research. And yeah, operating with artificial intelligence sounds risky."

Deep inside, Cordelia thinks Bella's other arm is absolutely atrocious by Betan standards, but figures that Barrayarans would probably be impressed, since it least it seems to function well.

"So, if you don't mind my asking, where are you from, Ms. Fennix?"

Date: 2008-11-06 08:43 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
"OH!" Look at that lightbulb gaslamp on yaye. "You know Miles, correct?" If she's guessing right, Cordelia's either his wife, sister, or sister-in-law.

But she's not actually guessing out of a need to be polite, "It's extraordinarily fascinating, I am trying to keep myself somewhat restrained as not to bring home anything too advanced too fast. Who knows what would happen, eh?"

"I'm from a version of Earth in a town you've probably never heard of." A beat and a few ticks to let this sink in, "Kintostown, Wulfenbach Empire." The arm seems to function extraordinarily well, for the fact that it's so bulky. Both it and the leg are coated in brass, and both tick quietly in sync.

Date: 2008-11-06 08:49 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
Cordelia blinks for a moment. "I...just managed to get Miles down for his nap." Which is hard, let her tell you. The hyperactivity started young, and the inability to move his legs just made it more focused. But she's not going to get into the details now, because the fact Bella knows about Miles is weird.

"Oh, I understand. Aral would through a fit if I just started bringing things back from here. And I went to Earth years ago, when I was in school. Lovely planet. I'm Betan, myself. Although I live on Barrayar now, which is much further away from Earth than Beta. I'd say you've probably never heard of it, either, but...apparently you may have. I guess that's the Nexus for you."

Date: 2008-11-06 08:53 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
She blinks, tilting her head. "..My apologies for asking this question, but what is your relation to Herr Vorkosigan?" Oh shi-

"The Nexus is as close to off-planet as I have been, and likely will be at this rate." She shrugs slightly, "Of course, I am also from the nineteenth century, so it really is all relative."

Date: 2008-11-06 08:56 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
"...I'm General Count Vorkosigan's daughter-in-law. I'm Admiral Lord-Regent Vorkosigan's wife. And I have a one-year-old son named Miles." Who seems, understandably, a little less of a Herr Vorkosigan, y'know? Blink. Blink.

Cordelia smiles. "Your work is particularly impressive then, Ms. Fennix."

Date: 2008-11-06 08:59 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
"..Oh." Oh, Hell. Might as well come out and say it. "I appear to know an alternate of your son that is far, far older than one year of age." There is a bit of 'blink. blink.-ing' on this end as well.

"My apologies for the confusion, but I heard the name 'Vorkosigan'..." akfds. Bella knows she just screwed things up a ta.

"Er. Thank you." A little awkward, due to her massive mistake. Oops.

Date: 2008-11-06 09:06 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
"Oh. My. I'm not really as used to that sort of thing as others. I mean, I've heard there was some sort of alternate of Aral about." Pause. " least, that there was a Barrayaran admiral in the Nexus at one point. I...just assumed they meant Aral." There's a little more blinking but...yes, subject change.

"So, what's your particular research focus? Just getting a feel for it in general?"

Date: 2008-11-06 09:16 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
Subject change is leaped onto like a Spark desperate for *SCIENCE!*

"I generally construct weapons or engines most of the time, but I sort of branch out into a little of everything." Eh-heh, "With varying definitions of 'little', depending on the Science in question."

"I constructed Ding, there, but I was sort of super-caffeinated at the time, and don't recall exactly what I did." Ding skitters up her pant leg and up onto her shoulders. He dings and waves to Cordelia again. Ding is helo.

Date: 2008-11-06 09:24 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
If Ding does not seem to object, Cordelia kind of awkwardly pats him.

"It's amazing how different things can be applied different places. A...fine scientist I knew," Sad face! "Was doing some very impressive research towards applying obstetrics technology to treat burn victims."

Anything to do with DeLoreans appears to be Doc bait, even for those who have only peripherally heard of the car thanks to being kidnapped by Faeries long before they could complete the time machine. Anyway, Doc's attracted by the humming and the messing about with car engines. He wanders over to where Bella is and watches with interest. "Anything in particular you're trying to do there?"

Date: 2008-11-07 02:16 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
Bella is working on taking the engine apart, bit by bit, "Ah, Hallo." She gives him a wave, behind it, now, "Disassembling it to find out how it works in comparison to the engines I know and have constructed myself."

Date: 2008-11-07 02:19 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
"Aha." Doc can get on board with that plan. "Find anything interesting so far? Anything you didn't expect to find?" He leans over the engine a bit, examining what she's already done.

Date: 2008-11-07 02:24 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
"For one thing, that it's made of mostly manufactured parts." This apparently makes her a little sad at this. Not making parts by hand anymore is just...

Yes. "But, despite this, it's given me a few ideas in terms or arrangement, in how to reduce the size of my engine designs a little."

About a third of the engine is disassembled, and most of that from the underside of it (which is why it's hanging on the rack).

Date: 2008-11-07 02:32 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
Doc looks a bit confused. "Well -- yes. It's a car engine. They're designed for mass production. Making them by hand would take too long." Not that Doc doesn't have an appreciation for handmade stuff, he just understands efficiency concerns. "I take it they don't do that often where you're from."

Doc grins at that. "That's good then. Always nice to get new ideas." He looks down at the disassembled underside. "What do you plan to do with it once you've taken it completely apart?" 'Put it back together' would be the obvious answer, but you never know.

Date: 2008-11-07 02:37 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
"True, but there's just something about an engine or a machine that's made by hand. The care that goes into the work of it." She shakes her head, "Most everything is made by hand, unless it's something like a really simple item." A one-shouldered shrug.

But his question makes her grin, "Oh, that's a good question."

"I am going to improve it." Because, you see, that is what a Spark does. She does not do this mere mortal thing of 'putting it back together', she makes it better.

Date: 2008-11-07 02:46 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
Doc nods. "I know. There's nothing quite like home-made, is there? I've owned plenty of manufactured items, but I never really considered them 'mine' until I'd tinkered with them a bit." He smirks. "Broke more coffee-makers that way. . . ."

Doc grins back. He likes the way she thinks. He may not be an official Spark, but damn if he doesn't like his science. "Improve it?" he repeats, looking quite interested. "Make it better, faster?" He'd add a "stronger" there except "The Six Million Dollar Man" was after his time.

(OOC: I really gotta get me that T-shirt your icon's based off of. :D)

Date: 2008-11-07 02:56 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
"I tended to stay on the more mechanically oriented side of things when I broke through, moving parts, mechanical engines, machinery." She flexes her mechanical hand a bit and shifts her weight to her right side slightly.

"But. Yes. Improve it." She'd miss the reference to the Six Million Dollar Man as well, "Make it faster, more powerful, more efficient than what it is."

"BECAUSE IT HAS SO MUCH POTENTIAL." Her voice changes very slightly for a moment, grin a bit sharper as she eyes the engine, getting ideas.

((I saw it as a wallpaper on /wg/, and a lot of resizing later, we have that icon which is perfect for our sparky Ms. Fennix))

Date: 2008-11-07 03:24 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
"Broke through?" Doc hasn't heard that term before. "I'm a mechanical sort of person myself. I've dabbled in just about everything, and I do like chemistry, but I always come back to the levers and pulleys and the like. Give me a good set of tools and some scrap metal and parts and I'll be happy."

Doc notes the voice change and lifts an eyebrow. Weird, but he thinks it's good weird. "I'm all for making things better than they are." So long as it doesn't involve sticking clockwork parts inside someone who doesn't want them. "And most manufactured stuff could use a bit of tweaking." He looks at the engine a bit disdainfully. "Another advantage of homemade -- you can really push the limits."

(Exactly. :D)

From: [identity profile]
She clears her throat, slipping away from the MADNESS again, since she just glanced the edge of it, "I take it you haven't heard the term 'Spark', then, either?" She glances at him again for clarification.

"I like to work on engines in my spare time, and it's just fun to see the intricate dance of mechanics at work." She grins, "Not to mention that I agree, if it's manufactured, it could use improvement."

Date: 2008-11-07 03:50 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
"Nope, afraid I haven't," Doc says with a small shrug, steam hissing out his elbows.

Doc grins back. "Oh yes. The way the parts all fit together, forming a cohesive whole. . .working in unison to fulfill some purpose. . . ." He sighs happily. Damn, he loves invention. "There's nothing like seeing something you created work for the first time, is there?"

(Oh, that's cool!)

Date: 2008-11-07 04:26 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile]
"Ah, well." She's thoughtful a moment, "Well. I'm a Spark. The more impolite term back home is 'Mad Scientist', or a Madgirl."

She starts working on removing another part. "I broke through when I was sixteen, when I first went into the Madness Place--what drives me to do the things I do." A beat, "Ding, hand me that, would you?" She points, and the scorpion clank makes a clickinoise and skitters up the rack with the screwdriver.

"That was what the voice change was."
